Ah you just reminded me of an idea I had when I was pursuing my bachelor's. Basically I wanted to use Google Glass to create surgeon accountability software. It would record a surgeries and store the video then use CV to look at shaking hands, technique, tools, and process. I figured it would allow us to correlate processes to recovery time and outcomes. Could you imagine the data we could have gotten? It would've been astounding. However I went to the head of surgery in the med school at my University and was told that in no uncertain terms would any surgeon wear that or submit the recording that in fact it would turn into a malpractice liability. He just couldn't get past the harm that it would cause him.
- stephencanon 9y agoI don't want to dismiss your idea, but it's also worth noting that the majority of surgical errors are decision-making errors, not technical errors. Most mistakes aren't anything you'll see on video; they occured before the case started when the surgeon decided to perform operation X when Y was more appropriate.
- amrrs 9y agoYes, I remember watching Atul Gawande talking about reducing Surgical Deaths by some 30ish % after creating a checklist for surgeons to do x after y after z!
- sorokod 9y agoThat sounds like a very general statement that could benefit from evidence such as the one that might have been provided by actual recordings of the procedures.
- et2o 9y agoThese technologies are only used to penalize surgeons and never to enable new things. Obviously course your idea would be rejected.
- cprayingmantis 9y agoMy argument would be either use them now where the surgeons can still use the tech to benefit them or be forced to by malpractice insurance later where you can't reap as many benefits.
