Isn't this tech more useful on the other side of the phone?
It is true that you may try to catch emotion from the user face but on the other side you can catch the world...
- pen2l 9y agoYou're looking for Google Tango, then: https://get.google.com/tango/ https://get.google.com/tango/
- redial 9y agoOne step at a time...the world will still be here tomorrow.
- cududa 9y agoUse to work on the Kinect so have some knowledge around it - not really. The lenses and power requirements to do more than a couple feet away would be huge. Though I'm sure they'll eventually get it.
- cma 9y agoFrom cursory reading, laser illuminators can be ~50X more efficient than the IR LEDs in Kinectv2 (though v1, ehich they compare it to, used IR lasers too, and didn't need active cooling like v2, it can also spread the illumination over a longer exposure than is required for v2's time-of-flight) and illuminate a much more narrow band which allows you to use a more selective filter, so you have less background IR to overcome. It still may be only good to a few feet out in direct sunlight, I don't know.
- convolvatron 9y agohaving a phone-based ruler with a couple foot range would be pretty handy. if you took a lot of samples as the phone bobbed around, how good a resolution do you think one could get?
- legulere 9y agoOn the other side apple gets depth maps with two cameras that have different lenses. Different distance to objects, different technologies.
- robotresearcher 9y agoThe Google Tango devices have this. Unfortunately the tech has limited range and doesn't work well outdoors, since it relies on projecting an IR pattern into the world. The projected image is easily overwhelmed by ambient IR.
- kevinchen 9y agoProbably, but a big problem with structured light is the inverse square law. You need a lot more power to recover depth of far objects -- this is why all the Project Tango phones are yuuuge and not selling too well. There are ways around the inverse square law (such as projecting a single/few laser beams) but the hardware becomes slower and more complicated.
