The main issue here is how much of a PITA it is to work with HTTPS locally (totally true that .dev is the wrong thing to use for dev boxes here). Self signing certs and forcing /etc/resolver/ configs is only half of it. Then you run into trouble with mobile emulators, proxying, etcetc. We have an automated setup of it for devs, but it's out of necessity rather than anything else. It's a pain to deal with.
