- lucb1e 9y agoAs a developer, I never used .dev for development and I don't know anyone who does. The number of developers around the world is a small percentage of all users, let alone if not all of them have this redirect. And those who do probably use /etc/hosts, so your specific host needs to be in there (since the hosts file does, unfortunately, not do wildcards)... yeah, I think people are not going to have any second thoughts registering .dev domains.
- corobo 9y agoI use .dev via dnsmasq resolving *.dev to 127.0.0.1. I wouldn't register any dev domains though these are supposed to be throwaways based on the project (my "serve" script takes the folder name and uses that plus .dev as a domain) I'll just switch to .test as recommended elsewhere
- evolve2k 9y agoBasecamps open source project POW (http://pow.cx http://pow.cx), specifically configures rails projects to be automatically available at projectname.dev From the homepage "That’s it! Your app will be up and running at http://myapp.dev/ http://myapp.dev/. See the user’s manual for more information." I'm sure basecamp won't love this change and I'd guess many rails devs won't like this either.
- dbbk 9y agoAs does the popular Laravel Valet (https://laravel.com/docs/5.5/valet https://laravel.com/docs/5.5/valet) service in the PHP world.
- spiralganglion 9y agoLet's hope this issue gets some traction: https://github.com/basecamp/pow/issues/545 https://github.com/basecamp/pow/issues/545 It's a bit unnerving that the project hasn't seen an update since 2014, and has 100 open issues.
- tokenizerrr 9y agoI use it and have for like 5-10 years now. Then gTLDs happened and Google bought it. And now they're being total dicks and destroying my infra.
- kuschku 9y agoGoogle uses .dev also locally – the only name registered on .dev is google.dev, which resolves to 127.0.53.53 – a localhost address.
- CydeWeys 9y ago127.0.53.53 is the IP address used for ICANN's Controlled Interruption process. It essentially means "fix your shit; you're unintentionally leaking requests to the Internet". We do not use .dev locally.
