There is nothing wrong with turning a profit, which is healthy. But when profit maximization is the prime directive, well... you know what happens. As other commenters have pointed out, single-payer works well enough in Europe (there are issues, but I doubt they are directly inputable to the single-payer policy). Of course, that's rather hard to understand for the fringe of the population that can't distinguish between socialism and communism, solidarity and reckless selflessness.
