VAT is not a tax on companies, it is a tax on consumer spending. VAT is merely collected by the companies on behalf of the tax authorities. What's the difference? Well, for one, the company cannot deduct VAT since it is zero-sum; they are only transferring it. Secondly VAT is exactly the same no matter which country the company operates in.
