I only think it is useful once you're comfortable with it. Before you are you are probably better off using whatever mental intuition you already have about the idea. Personally I consider it useful to associate the concept to the idea of distributed systems (together with other concepts like commutativity). Having this association can help guide me towards either common appropriate ways of solving problems in that space, or as a good search-phrase to include when I google for algorithms.
