Did you see the article recently about recognizing stop signs? However the machine supposedly recognized stop signs, it had nothing to do with them being red, hexagonal, or saying "STOP". It was possible to deface a sign such that it was clearly still red, hexagonal, etc. but the machine didn't recognize it. So IMO the machine had no 'mental model' of what a stop sign is.
