I find the author's experience with latex very similar to my own. The core parts of LaTeX are very simple to learn, and you get to produce high-quality documents fairly easily thanks to its sane defaults. However, once you want to get a bit advanced, all its abstractions leak and it's impossible to comprehend anything without knowing implementation details.
