Not only that, but saying "rich" is usually shorthand for famous and/or having high social status. The money itself seems to me the least interesting aspect of "making it". Especially in the startup world, what most of us dream of (in my experience), is recognition from our peers, attention, etc, not zeros on a bank statement.
- __s 9y agoWhen I say "rich" I mean it in shorthand of "enough money to not have to interact with the world socially to make money" Of course it's a meme that doesn't spread itself, kind of hypocritcal to be posting on a social platform
- g00gler 9y agoQuoting Talib Kweli, "Give me the fortune, keep the fame". Though I agree with your sentiment as it applies in broad strokes I'd like to sell some software, make ~$10M, and be a recluse. I don't even need the $10M, though, I'd be happy to not have to wake up at 7 o'clock, rush to the train, then sit at a desk all day.
- greeble 9y agoDebbie Harry sang this in 1989: "I'll keep the money, you can have the fame" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Want_That_Man https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Want_That_Man
- aj_g 9y agoHuh, didn't realize this was such a popular sentiment: Tupac, 1996: "All I want is money, fuck the fame, I'm a simple man" https://genius.com/41188 https://genius.com/41188
- sjcsjc 9y agoAbsolutely agree with this. My time is what I want, not money, though it would be nice. And being famous would be a nightmare for me.
