Unemployment Can Spell Divorce for Men, But Not Women

One might say that women who get high status men (high salary) choose to keep them and those who get low status choose to find new new opportunities.
- ourmandave 9y agoI've read that a lot of men never see it coming and though everything was fine. The wife has suffered in silence for years and has finally given up on the whole thing.
- cbcoutinho 9y agoYou might say that the question "where have all the good men gone?" is synonymous with "where have all the good jobs gone?"
- ikeyany 9y agoPerhaps we should look inward. Perhaps our understanding of "good" is fundamentally flawed.
- DiNovi 9y agolol holy shit, causation does not equal correlation applies highly here
- nnfy 9y agoYou dont have to be so skeptical just because the premise is not PC. Edit: you people act like this isn't the reason he was so shocked. We will not solve society's problems if we do not allow ourselves to look at all possible causes. Science and taboo do not mix.

- hectorlorenzo 9y agoPure anecdata here. My dad became kind of a jerk when he got fired, years ago: he became a bitter pessimist, jealous at my mother (she was working) and desperate because he couldn't do what he was supposed to do (feed the family!). This lead to a divorce, after some time. What I mean is that possibly men and women react very differently to a situation of unemployment. As the article says, > The findings reveal that despite more women entering the workplace, the pressure on husbands to be breadwinners largely remains. Could it be that unemployed men become really difficult people to deal with, in most circumstances?
- dennisgorelik 9y ago> unemployed men become really difficult people to deal with You confuse cause and effect. Difficult people end up being unemployed.
- watwut 9y agoWomen report higher happiness after divorce on average while men lower happiness after divorce. The women initiating divorce more often then men might just be both groups doing correct guess about what follows. A lot of peole of both genders (meaning dudes too) see male role as breadwinner supposed to work a lot of hours, but not really supposed to do logistic around children or even spend time enough with spouse to keep relationships alive - it is not even possible with over 60 hours a week schedule. You can see that attitude in tech community often. With such arrangement, her loss of job makes her a bit more depressive, but relationship kinda can continue almost the same. His loss of job is personal catastrophe for him, loss of identity, familly role and lot more stress overall. It is not just money, it is identity and self respect going away for them. Such change is hard on marriage even absent financial stress - which makes everything double hard.
