To cut a long story short, I initiated an inward transfer with Gandi and paid accordingly. It was a premium domain for a new gTLD so quite expensive (~€150 for one year)
There was an issue with their transfer authorization emails -- one was never received, another to a different email (having changed email in the WHOIS) was received and authorized but their system never acknowledged as much.
The transfer ultimately never happened, the domain lapsed and was snapped up by someone else.
Their support were unhelpful, argumentative, and acted like they were doing me a favor by refunding the fee for a transfer that never happened, all while they lost my (quite valuable) domain.
Never again.
