- lol768 9y agoThanks for the recommendation, a few friends have spoken pretty highly of them too. Do you know if they have an API (for DNS records)?
- gtsteve 9y agoGandi has an API. Furthermore, AWS uses Gandi for some of its TLD domain name registration so I feel that it's a pretty safe choice - I can only imagine that AWS has a tough due diligence process. I've used Gandi before and I recommend it.
- djmobley 9y agoGandi are expensive and I had a nightmare experience where they literally lost one of my domains on an inward transfer. Customer service was unhelpful and downright rude. Never had any problems with Namecheap.
- Karunamon 9y agoNamecheap has a good service but their lack of proper 2 factor auth (opting for only SMS which is really broken[1] rather than proper TOTP) scared me away a while ago. After raising this issue last February, they said it was coming soon. A year and some more of no action later, I transferred all my domains out since using known-broken security apparently isn't a priority for them, and it probably reflects in other and harder-to-see ways. - djmobley 9y agoIt's not full TOTP support, but they do now offer 2FA via an Authy OneTouch implementation.
- Karunamon 9y agoI did not know that! Looks like[1] it went live back in July. I still wish they'd have used TOTP rather than this onetouch thing that's restricted to a single app, but just about anything was better than SMS, so this is a welcome development. - themgroup 9y agoAlas for the moment NameCheap still have a significant number of domains and services powered by eNom as the largest eNom reseller. Any eNom issues also currently impact NameCheap. They do appear to have far superior support though!
- mikelward 9y agoSupposedly new Namecheap registrations since January do not use eNom? http://www.hostjury.com/blog/view/805/ http://www.hostjury.com/blog/view/805/
- eps 9y agoI've been with Gandi for over 10 years and I can confirm that their customer support is indeed quite crappy, even with simpler matters.
- yuchi 9y agoHonest question: why so long then?
- detritus 9y agoNot the op, but I have a fairly crap webhost and domain provider (different companies) who I've been with for about 8 and 19 years respectively and for me not changing is simply a balancing - does their crapness outweigh the bother I'd have to suffer to change over my sites and so many domains? 'Not yet', is my answer.
- eps 9y agoBecause they are not US-based and it all generally works well, so very little support is actually required.
- tobltobs 9y ago> where they literally lost one of my domains on an inward transfer. Could you give a summary how this happened?
- djmobley 9y agoTo cut a long story short, I initiated an inward transfer with Gandi and paid accordingly. It was a premium domain for a new gTLD so quite expensive (~€150 for one year) There was an issue with their transfer authorization emails -- one was never received, another to a different email (having changed email in the WHOIS) was received and authorized but their system never acknowledged as much. The transfer ultimately never happened, the domain lapsed and was snapped up by someone else. Their support were unhelpful, argumentative, and acted like they were doing me a favor by refunding the fee for a transfer that never happened, all while they lost my (quite valuable) domain. Never again.
