Honestly, this makes sense to me too, but what scientific evidence is there of reading creating/affecting mental models for people? The article seemed like a lot of opinion, but not much evidence. When I listen to audiobooks or read for personal development or business, I make an effort to apply things I've learned from the books to derive value.
