For the purpose of 1st amendment protection, you can criticize your employer with impunity. You can criticize the government with impunity, too. What most people mean when they talk about their freedom of speech is the privilege of speaking without losing their job. I find it to be a tragic if not fatal misunderstanding pervasive to discussions about speech.
