This may be a function of the somewhat fickle nature of my short term memory, but I find the transition of looking between screens to be noticeably easier than switching between virtual desktops or something similar. This is despite the fact that I use keyboard shortcuts for switching between maximized windows on a single monitor and do so pretty fluidly.
