The best organizations to support I find are regional food banks or healthcare groups. I've given some fund to Direct Relief and the Houston Food Bank. Your local food bank may also be providing support, so check with them first. I'm generally reserved about going crazy about supporting aid efforts, since the nightmare regarding aid projects post-Haiti really did dampen my enthusiasm.
