The answer to a lot of 'mysteries' about North Korea is that it's a lot wealthier than we've been led to believe. Not first world by any standard but a lot of people there have an ok standard of living, especially in Pyongyang. They also probably feel a mite threatened by the nukes that have been pointed at them since the 60s. There are still a lot of defections though.
