The most interesting change that self-flying planes could enable is making small planes & helicopter transportation viable for everyone. Assuming automation progresses to the point where safety is solved (i.e. at least as safe as in a car), and that noise is also solved, you could imagine a large quadcopter style drone that will pick you up and drop you off anywhere. Once it converts to electricity, the cost of operation would be very low.
