I worked 3 months remote for the first few months of my current job and, whenever we would hop onto google hangouts, the first few minutes would typically be personal/small-talk things like that. Naturally, if you're talking to someone 5x a day for whatever reason, you'll probably get down to business, but it's easy to find yourself not having talked with someone for a week. Also, we had a "beer 'o clock" every friday around 4 where everyone available hopped on hangouts and just talked--sometimes work related, sometimes not.
