Their UI looks like it's based on Gnome -- I wonder if they wrote some extensions to make Gnome more phone-friendly.
IMO great idea to use Matrix as the communication layer -- especially when double-ratchet is stable, it'll be able to provide the good UX of things like Signal on Android, iMessage, Google Duo, and FaceTime, but built on an open platform. Hope it does well!
- swiley 9y agoA Decade ago there was a sort of gnome for PDAs. I don't know if that's what this is.

- swiley 9y agoThat's QT not GTK. Also QT is still used while the toolkit I'm thinking of isn't.
- hedora 9y agoYou might be talking about Enlightenment (not dead yet) or the openmoko gtk ui, though I forget its name too.

- petecox 9y agoBefore they switched to Qt, Nokia had extensions to GTK called Hildon.
- sever5 9y agoFamiliar Linux came in GPE (Gnome) and OPIE (Qt) flavors.
- moosingin3space 9y agoThat was a long time ago, and I think it's discontinued. Gnome Mobile and Embedded Initiative hasn't had an update presented at GUADEC or any other major FOSS conferences in 8 years.
- dwhabcdefg 9y agoIt sounds like Matrix is currently "facing a major funding crisis." (https://matrix.org/blog/2017/07/07/a-call-to-arms-supporting-matrix/ https://matrix.org/blog/2017/07/07/a-call-to-arms-supporting...) Which makes me worried that this downstream project depends upon it.
- Arathorn 9y agoThis is a chicken and egg problem :) Support from Purism if this campaign is successful is one of many ways Matrix's funding can be secured going forwards!
