I guess I've avoided crippling disillusionment because I never expected a job to be fulfilling or whatever. It's a means of providing for myself and my family, that's it. The idea that it's supposed to be more than that is really strange to me.
When I was in my 20s the only jobs I could get was stuff like waiting tables and working in outbound call centers. Whenever I'm down I remind myself that at least I don't have to do that bullshit anymore. Now I sit in an air conditioned office with a nice view, and can work from home on a regular basis. I know what my availability will be in a month. I can take vacations. That's pretty cool!
I literally can't imagine "loving" a job. No matter what it is, the fact that I have to do it every day, year after year, just to have health insurance and avoid homelessness, ruins it for me. That's not a complaint, that's an assertion that I'm about as happy doing this as I would be doing anything else.
