It looks like Atom is at least moving in the right direction - I see 736MB RAM on OSX with that 6MB XML file open. For me it's less the RAM usage and more latency that annoys me. Things like the way you can see the syntax highlighting being done down the screen in even small file, or the half second delay switching channels in Slack.
