There are lots of crazy people, and gaming the courts is way many of them make a living, or garner attention, or just give themselves something to do when they are otherwise put together. I've been 3rd party to multiple frivolous suits in california. It's shocking to see the amount of work put into lost causes, but people still show up and fight speeding tickets too...so that's just the USA.
- jacquesm 9y agoI suspect one of the key differences that enables this is that in the United States lawyers can take cases on a contingency basis. There are other (some European countries too) places where this is possible but in the United States it seems to be much more common, especially in such cases where outcome is a long shot but the pay-off is large. If you know for sure that you will lose money (and possibly a substantial amount) for bringing a frivolous lawsuit that works as a deterrent. Of course it isn't perfect and may result in some cases that do have merit also not being brought.
