And yes, I think that's the right idea. Start out with children's material and progressively move up to more complicated material as you become comfortable. Without subs is the best idea too. Honestly, what I've found, the more and more I understand Spanish, the less and less subtitles make sense... in the sense that they don't capture the full meaning anyways.
I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but it's funny to go to a bank or ride a bus that has everything in English/Spanish and compare the two. Often, they're saying relatively different things, meant to convey the same meaning. It always feels like I'm sharing in a little secret understanding, haha.
I hope one day to reach a native/fluent understanding of Spanish.
