I've come to the same conclusion. Why do one-time wonders get a free pass on indefinite business? I believe a business should have to innovate to keep recurring business. Artificially tying it to a subscription is just milking a cow for more than it's worth. Or in this case, charging for access to an unlimited cow that you sometimes augment.
