In the case of a washing machine, they design the unit to stop functioning in the near future, sell you a limited warranty, and then frequently try to sell you an extended warranty. It's different, but yes, things are dressed up to extract the most they can from a customer.
- iamatworknow 9y ago>they design the unit to stop functioning in the near future I don't believe anything is "designed" to stop functioning. That's just a happy accident that results from cost cutting measures in the manufacturing process.
- probablybroken 9y agoOk, maybe it's arrived at via an evolutionary process then - with selection being provided by stakeholders. The outcome is however the same.
- nhtoe78hnt 9y agoAnd it doesn't work. I moved into a new house and the relatively new LG refrigerator stopped working 2 days later. The repair person said the compressor had died and it would cost $1,000 to fix. We opted to buy a new refrigerator and completely avoided anything made by LG. The other appliances in the house are LG, too. I believe the previous owners were in the house for ~5 years so I don't think any of the appliances are older than that. If any of them breaks in the next few years, they will be replaced with different brands.
