A long time ago I started using Obnam when DreamHost allowed 50GB of free backup server space via sftp. Obnam could manage "dumb" remote sftp endpoints as well as encrypt, de-dupe, and periodically purge old data.
After obnam got slower and DH dropped the back-up service I started to search for alternatives and stumbled on attic. I ran attic in parallel for a while before its development went stale and was forked to borg backup[0]. Borg backup and obnam run on for my daily backups, but soon it looks like it will be time to retire obnam.
I'll miss obnam, it was one of the first "simple" back-up utilities that had the features I wanted (de-duped, encryption, history purging, integrity checking). It's too it never evolved to something easier to scale and maintain. I like to think it has given rise to other tools like borg backup which now have a seemingly scalable community and software design.
Thanks for your contribution Lars, you set a high bar for other backup utiltiies and I certainly think the ecosystem is better because of it.
