If you are a skilled lathe operator, but the only jobs near where you want to / need to live are coding jobs... yes, learn to program. Just like if you were a blacksmith but nobody was riding horses much anymore, it's time to learn a new craft. It's not easy, but it's necessary. Having programs to help with that is something that, I think, government can help out with some, especially if government policies are moving the jobs away from lathe operators/blacksmithers.
