How portable is your laptop if you can't use it for more than 30 minutes without an electrical socket? A quarter pound is an insignificant amount of weight. Most people would probably quickly get used to having to carry around 5 extra pounds of weight in their daily bag/backpack/whatever. Also, there is a massive range of computing power between "I can barely use gmail because my browser is laggy" and needing a compute cluster; and a massive difference between being able to perform your daily computing tasks smoothly vs. with noticeable lag that adds friction to everything you try to do. Your dichotomies are false and hyperbolic.
I think a significant proportion of people who are even moderate computer users would prefer increased battery life and snappy performance at the expense of a slightly bulkier laptop.
