Maybe it's supposed to be more like a tutoring?
I don't know if such policy exists in Google but many American companies having their software houses in Poland give woman extra points during recruitment only for their gender, in order to help them start a real work even if for various reasons they miss some experience, not because of their gender but because there is much less experienced female programmers than male programmers.
I don't suggest that the tutoring should be obligatory for females and made by males but simply a help from a more experienced employee would help all newcomers.
I was lucky enough to get my first job in a quite small company with quite small teams and many very experienced employees(10 years in the same company wasn't that uncommon) and I took enormous advantage from such informal tutoring.
