Design and maintainability are not mutually exclusive.
The original Thinkpad design is the laptop equivalent of blue jeans - functional, comfortable, durable, fashionably flexible, and timeless. Are blue jeans as "high" fashion as an evening gown? No. Does that make them "bad" fashion? No.
I for one want more blue-jean electronics.

They may not win any awards for design, but I'm impressed with how thin and light mine is considering without any tools I can pop off the bottom cover, exposing access to the user-replacable battery, CPU fan, and hard drive. A couple additional screws gives you access to user-replacable RAM.
