My MacBook Air is sleek and also very easy to repair and service.
This aspect of products is not so black and white, and comes down to the design decisions made by the product people and engineers.
- crispyambulance 9y agoYeah, "easy" is in the eye of the beholder. For some folks a BGA rework is a piece of cake, for others it means "scrap". Depends on your tools, skills, time, will-power, documentation and tolerance for screw-ups. Mostly skill. I've seen techs performing successful BGA replacements on laptop MOBO's in repair stands in Mexico with pathetic equipment.
- smilekzs 9y agoIn Shenzhen, China, techs are supposed to be able to put together an iPhone from scrap parts.
- mschuster91 9y agoHow is that actually possible for a human given all the sub-millimetre-parts like micro smd resistors etc?
- candiodari 9y agoAnswer: plastic cutouts where you position the parts in prepared holes.
- crispyambulance 9y agoIt's not feasible for more than a few components-- we are, of course, talking about repair. You use a microscope, tweezers, a steady hand and accept a high rate of failure. Board repair only makes economic sense in certain markets where the price of electronics is high compared to to disposable income.
- redial 9y agoAs sleek as the MacBook Air is, the new 12" MacBook leaves it in the dust.
- tracker1 9y agoI'd still rather have a device I can upgrade the ram and storage on, as well as replace the battery... I miss my prior mbp (stolen)
