Ask HN: Opinions on nonprofit startup strategies for 2018?

I am contemplating a nonprofit strategy for one of my projects. Basically an open source platform with a marketplace model for plugins, hosting, enterprise services, etc. My motivation isn't necessarily altruistic - what I really want is to be able to work on this for the next decade with talented people and pay the bills. Is a nonprofit model generally considered a detriment or an advantage with respect to sustainability? I'm also aware of the difference between a nonprofit vs a charitable organization - I'm interested in hearing about startup experiences with both. I'm also curious about the viability of launching multiple entities simultaneously (i.e. a nonprofit to license the platform and a for-profit llc to offer enterprise services). The wikimedia model, the wordpress/automatic model, etc, sound very intriguing to me - but admittedly I know very little about them. On a personal level, I do think I'd rather be like Jimmy Wales than Steve Jobs though. I'd appreciate recommendations on books, warnings on potential pitfalls, etc.
