What's Louisana and Wyoming's problem?
- njharman 9y agoRespectively, AC and (maybe) low population so static stuff like street lights have higher impact.

- francisofascii 9y agoWyoming leads the nation in coal production, accounting for two-fifths of all coal mined in the United States. (According to EIA) So you have high industrial consumption and low population.
- pklausler 9y agoIs the coal consumed in WY?
- topspin 9y agoYes, but the vast bulk of it is moved to other states and countries via coal trains and bulk freighters. The state has only 580k citizens but is producing 42% of all US coal.
- pklausler 9y agoSo no, it's not consumed in WY.
- panzagl 9y agoIt's not all consumed in WY, but some is.
- francisofascii 9y agoEnergy is consumed to mine and transport the coal.
- fludlight 9y agoMost of it isn't. In 2015 Wyoming produced 6,538 trillion BTUs of coal[1], of which, it used 487 trillion BTUs (~7%) [2]. - tomsthumb 9y agoTo re-iterate, Seattle proper (not the metro area w/ Bellvue, Tacoma, etc) has a larger population than the state of Wyoming. Any per-capita comparisons which involve industrial measurements on a statewide basis are going to seem weird for Wyoming.
- niftich 9y agoIndustrial use. Louisiana [1] has 18 oil refineries, numerous chemical plants, and various other facilities to process oil and natural gas that are produced both in-state and imported from elsewhere. Compared to Texas, which has more oil refineries, Louisiana has a much smaller population, pushing the per capita number higher. Wyoming [2] expends over 58% of its energy use in the industrial sector, including energy-intensive activities like open-pit and strip coal mining (such as in Powder River Basin), underground mining (e.g. trona, soda ash). It also has six oil refineries. Further, it's located along one of the busiest transcontinental transportation corridors (Union Pacific's Rawlins and Laramie Subs, I-80), and all that Powder River Basin coal also ships out by rail -- transportation consumes another 20%. - asteli 9y agoWyoming also has a tiny population. More live people in San Francisco than do in all of Wyoming.
