The greatest value of a music recommendation engine, IMO, is cross-genre discovery. The history of recording industry "Genres" has close ties to cultural segregation. Pandora's Music Genome approach is optimized to break the genre barrier. It'd be interesting to see how many "Down tempo" songs shared characteristics with "R&B", for example. I think the Author's approach could still be applied.
