I think the web could actually benefit from this and most developers these days are used to sending their client code through a compiler already so it would make a minimal difference in tooling. Personally, though, webpack is pretty amazing. When I first heard of it I very much disliked it but it combined transpiling, with minification, with code optimization like tree shaking (getting rid of code from the compiled result that is unused).
