Professor who refused to use other genders pronouns, was banned by Google
- jbmorgado 9y agoWelcome to the XXI century Politically Correct totalitarianism.
- dang 9y agoWe've asked you so many times not to post ideological flamebait and name-calling to HN, and you've kept doing it, so I've banned your account. All: Multiple views are welcome on HN, but comments need to become more civil and substantive, not less, as the topic grows more divisive. We all know what internet callout/shaming culture has become. The mandate of Hacker News requires that the community work together to avoid creating such a war zone here. Therefore, if you have a substantive point to make, make it thoughtfully, and otherwise please don't comment until you do.
- jbmorgado 9y agoIt's ok you little fascist. But let me inform you that censorship is severely lacking, I can simply create a new account and keep doing it. Thing is, while you don't stop doing your little white knight ridiculous censorship, we can always create new accounts and sabotage your nice echo chamber.., or you can stop the false advertising and call the site Social Justice Warrior News - News for Snowflakes and let a new site that's really about Hacker News take its place. Sure, we can't vote, but with you and your thought police removing flags from ridiculous SJW posts, flagging any contrary comment or submission and deleting accounts that don't follow your idealogical cringing, voting in here has no purpose anyway. Have fun, talk to you again soon... in here.
- dang 9y agoSure, of course, people create new accounts all the time. That's how it goes an an optionally anonymous internet forum. But I wish I could somehow persuade you that you're taking the wrong view of the site and the people who work on it. We're not ideologues, we're not interested in promoting one ideology over another, and when I say "not interested" I mean deeply, deeply not interested. This goes back to the character of HN's founder, who's simply curious about a wide range of things. We moderate political threads, not for ideological reasons but in the hope of preserving HN as a place for civil, substantive discussion. Many views can be and are exchanged here, but when people post in a way that threatens the container itself, we moderate and/or ban them. The mandate of the community requires this. Sometimes (well, frequently) this provokes an angry response from the moderated and/or banned user, who sees us as their enemy and accuses us of making decisions for ideological reasons. The thing is, though, this response arises in almost identical form regardless of the ideology that user favors. There are countless examples of people complaining about HN being biased in just the opposite way to how you see it. What these complaints have in common is not the politics they favor—they completely disagree on that—but the intense emotion with which they favor it. That's presumably the same emotion that motivates the inflammatory flamewar-style comments in the first place. This is the force that threatens the container and we all need to do the work of moderating it in ourselves so we can (a) hear each other and (b) not wreck the commons. If you want to do that work, you're welcome here.
- miles 9y agoFrom this[1] report: "'I’ve had that account for the last, say, 15 years,' said Peterson to TheDCNF. 'All of my correspondence is in that account. It’s hundreds of thousands of emails from people all over the world.'" Setting aside the fact that Gmail hasn't even existed for 15 years[2], this underscores the need for users to backup their cloud-based email accounts. A few of the many options include MailStore Home for Windows[3], Horcrux for macOS[4], imap-backup[5] for *nix (or anything Ruby runs on apparently), and Gmvault[6] for Windows, macOS, and Linux. - blusterXY 9y agoGmail launched in 2004, about 15 years ago.
- miles 9y agoGmail was in a very limited public beta during 2004 and 2005, not moving out of beta status until mid 2009. Even if he was an early adopter (which seems unlikely given the length of his email address and the fact that the oldest reference to it Google turns up appears to be from 2011), we still don't arrive at 15 years. Whether he has 13 years or 13 months worth of email stored in his Gmail account, I hope he has started archiving it now!
- blusterXY 9y agoMy email address is also my full name and I was in at the very beginning as well. And 2004-2017 is 14 years.

- chis 9y agoIt's since been reinstated according to his Twitter. I would guess (and hope) that he was automatically banned based on the huge quantity of reports he presumably receives.
- icefox 9y agoNo where in the twitter feed is gender pronouns mentioned
- stcredzero 9y agoHere's a good place to start with Jordan Peterson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJSJcPKA1Ug https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJSJcPKA1Ug I think he's a brilliant and courageous man. Before you criticize him, find out what he's really about. I would characterize him as "Mr. Rogers for adults." A part of his refusal stems from 1) his knowledge that the Canadian law in question asserts scientific falsehoods and codifies them into law and 2) his objection to the law's compulsion to say things (as opposed to a compulsion to not say certain things) which to him represent something related to Marxist ideology (through Postmodern Social Construction) and 3) other structural objections to the Canadian law in question, which he feels oversteps the protection of individual freedoms by, for example, abrogating due process. I find that watching his lectures is very worthwhile, from the standpoint of the Humanities. He may well end up being one of those responsible for saving the Humanities as the 21st century internet continues to disrupt higher education. In particular, he has a formulation of the Humanities which is compatible with and draws from evolutionary biology.
