High speed rail pretty much only works in Japan and Europe for this very reason. It does have the benefit of offering a rather relaxing travel experience compared to flying. Taking the Eurostar between Paris and London takes less than three hours, including security check and connect downtown to downtown. It sadly can't scale however.
