Ask HN: What is your setup for working within the (virtual) console?
I am a reasonbly heavy user of the command line / terminal, but I almost always do so within a GUI. I have started using the (virtual) console a bit, and have been very happy with the substantially reduced lag compared to doing console things in Xorg (even using a lightweight WM, i3, and console, urxvt or xterm). For writing (LaTeX, markdown) and coding, I generally do not need the GUI, so I would like to cultivate my use of the console.
However, I find the console somewhat limiting compared to the GUI, in terms of how many "terminals" I can have displayed simultaneously. I am using `screen` to split the monitor into multiple windows. However this sometimes feels cumbersome when trying to task-switch between writing/coding and, say, taking care of email.
How do you handle this sort of thing? Log in to a single vconsole and then attach/detach screen sessions as you change immediate focus? Single vconsole with nested screen instances (I find they default keybindings make this tedious at times)? Log into multiple vconsoles and treat them as you would treat different workspaces in a GUI?
