Some of the comments are just wrong: > You have to live at least 6 months in the UK to open a bank account or apply for a credit card. I moved to the UK and this was not the case. It was difficult to open a bank account but not because you need to live here 6 months but because the banks require all sorts of identification which you normally don't have as a recent immigrant (stuff like proof of address).
