I'd add the caveat though that being abused very likely is a humiliating experience, one which might induce feelings of powerlessness and self-consciousness, which might in turn make it difficult to confront the aggressor in the tone you are advocating. If the OP wants to do this, great, but I'd say that, if he chooses not to, he could be forgiven for being "passive" in this case.
