+1 for PiAware. It's just about the easiest project and a good intro to the Pi. Other things on Pi in my house: OpenVPN server (http://www.pivpn.io/ http://www.pivpn.io/) and Node-RED (https://nodered.org/ https://nodered.org/) for collecting temperature data and pushing to Power BI.
