Part of it is probably that a decent enough chunk of places (especially bars) in the Midwest are cash only. Personally I prefer always keeping some extra cash in my wallet to throwing even more of my life onto the internet. (I also find keeping my entertainment budget "cash only" really helps me think critically about what I want to buy)
