For reference: The generic name what op does is "spatial indexing". There is an algorithm for efficiently working with such data called Hilbert R-tree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilbert_R-tree https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilbert_R-tree).
