Ask HN: Why is the market for voice and video conferencing software so fragmented?
Every company I've worked with uses a different application. Slack, WebEx, Skype, Hangouts, Discord, the list is endless.
Why do you think this is? Why has no dominant choice emerged, as with most other software markets?
- ourarash 9y agoThere are many mature software markets that are still fragmented. Even when it comes to operating systems, there are still several choices. As for voice and video conferencing, there are several features and price points that these products offer, which causes each product to be more popular to its users. For example, having different channels in Slack, or deep integration into Outlook for Microsoft Lync/Skype are features that make these products unique.
