IMO Trump was the canary in the coal mine that the world had changed, just like 9/11 was in its time: both are highly visible, symbolic milestones that are loosely associated with the broader cultural changes that had been happening for a while, but are associated with that event nonetheless.
- TeMPOraL 9y agoYes, but you don't blame the canary for methane being in the mine. Similarly, you can't blame Trump for things that were well under way before anyone suspected he'll go into politics.
- exelius 9y agoOh; I don't blame Trump for any of this. He's not smart enough to deserve that. He's a reactionary populist, the latest in a long history of men willing to say or do anything in the pursuit of power. Trump is a mere opportunist; if it hadn't been him, it would have been someone else. His ideas are not his own - this movement has existed for a long time, so even with another figurehead, the ideas (racism, xenophobia, etc) would be the same. He craves only celebrity and power (increasingly the same thing these days). He views "right" and "wrong" in terms of applause and ratings. He is also in way over his head: a second rate used car salesman like Trump is a good liar, but he has no business playing Game of Thrones with a man like Vladimir Putin. Whether you like him or not, Putin is a career spy: he has personally killed countless people, and he plays Machiavellian politics on a level that Trump does not even have the mental capacity to understand: this is why Russian election meddling is so incomprehensible to Trump.
