Is there any reason to believe a present day Model S can't pass all the tests the A8 will go through to be approved for "eyes off" autonomous driving? (Other than changing the parameters for the "hands on wheel" warning)

  The A8 autonomy is only for freeway traffic jams. What you linked does not seem to be an example of that.

    The A8’s lane assistant can also handle this stuff, while the Tesla’s lane assistant can not (obviously).
