    Oh the irony... sigh :/ I just resigned myself to do the Settings > tether over WiFi > WiFi only Every time.

  Works perfectly for me these days. It was a little fiddly 5 years ago, but with the newer OS functionality where you can select your phone from the WiFi drop-down (with tethering turned OFF on your phone) and it automagically connects to your phone, enables tethering, and hops online) is like magic. YMMV.

      I'm on Sierra now, yeah, but I want to say it worked on the previous release too.
