  Do the two words have a similar origin? I never thought of that until just now. Is the act of grit like being chunky and kind of hard? The same as the food and the thing that ruins bearings?

    Probably. Gritting your teeth is certainly a sign of enduring hardship. Though it also grinds food into grits.
